Advisors Reveal Their Favorite Sectors and Managers Among Impact Investments Now

(By Steve Garmhausen) – “We’re working with a group called Clarion Call Capital that is focused on the muni market, with a strong lens for funding infrastructure for excluded communities. They look at the vast municipal market and focus on low-income urban, rural, and indigenous communities where infrastructure has been ignored. We’ve been putting more and more money there, and I personally am invested there. It’s not very sexy, but it’s straightforward, the credit ratings are solid, and the yields are good. If you’re in a higher marginal bracket, you’re earning the equivalent of 6% or 7%.

In addition, we partner with a platform called Citizen Mint, which delivers off-Wall Street direct investment in the impact space. One investment I like there is called Overlay Capital, a waste and materials fund. This is a place where the use of artificial intelligence and robotics really makes sense to me because they can do things that have been unsafe or not cost-effective using human labor. They’re looking at manufacturers that prioritize sourcing of materials that are otherwise nonrecoverable. One of their portfolio companies uses robotics in electronics recovery, for example. Typically, data centers and electronics manufacturers generate lots of electronic waste, but we couldn’t disassemble it well because the manual cost was too high or it was unsafe. So they’re developing factories that use AI and robotics to disassemble complex electronics at scale and put them back into use for manufacturing domestically.”
